Classes

All our classes are small and hands-on. We start with a temperature check, practice social distancing and cook LOTS of great food!

Dickie’s Cooking School has one goal: to get you to love your own cooking. Our classes are small and hands-on. We work on our own, in pairs and in groups. You’ll learn how to cut, mince, chop, time meals and most importantly, to love your own cooking. 

Owner, Lisa Dickie is a former Special Education teacher with the TDSB and a self-taught cook. Our classes are laid back, informative encourage creativity and improvisation. But to improvise, you need a solid base of skills: how to handle a knife, how to chop and mince, kitchen hygeine and how to time and pace a meal. 

Classes are small. We wear masks while we cook and practice social distancing.

What To Expect

Expect to eat. All classes start with a snack (usually fresh baked bread, tea and coffee and some fruit). The classes move at a steady pace and combine instructional and hands on learning. You will always go home with samples (unless you eat everything there). Full-day PA Day Camps and Summer camps provide all the snacks, drinks and a full meal at lunch.

Come wearing comfortable, supportive closed-toe shoes and dress in casual comfortable clothing.

Tuesdays, 4 pm - 6:00 pm  September 14 - October 26

Every class starts with a healthy snack. We’ll prepare dinner and dessert and explore the nutritional value of foods, learn knife skills, kitchen safety and most importantly, learning to love the food you cook. Classes are hands-on with an emphasis on healthy and balanced eating. Students will work independently, in pairs and in groups. Classes will take place on site at Dickie’s Cooking School and will strictly follow Ministry of Health guidelines for social distancing.

Love Your Cooking II (Ages 8- 12 years)

Thursdays, 4 pm - 6 pm September 16 - October 28

Exciting introduction to cooking and baking fundamentals. We'll make 7 fun and easy meals to bring home and share. Expect to sample pasta, soups and bread. We'll cover pastry, muffins, cookies and cakes. We’ll explore international cooking and students will have the opportunity to choose their own recipes. They'll learn the basics of kitchen safety and hygiene too. We accommodate vegetarian and gluten free cooking. We keep our classes small (maximum 8 kids, to make sure you get lots of time to learn and explore in the kitchen. 

Classes for Adults with Down syndrome, MID and Autism

Fridays, 2 pm - 4pm September 17 - October 29

Emphasis on independence! We are thrilled to be offering programs tailored to young adults with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum and Mild Intellectual Disability. Each class starts with a healthy snack and we'll prepare a full meal. We will cover the nutritional benefits of food, discuss planning and pacing a meal and students will head home with samples. This is a hands-on cooking class. We'll cover knife skills, too.
